The sonic game that never was.

Kotaku just ran a pretty cool little story about a "NiGHTS" style Sonic game that was never released on the Saturn.

Overall it looked pretty cool. Still I can understand why the NiGHTS' team got upset and the game was never made.

Great find Caleb! I'm a tad confused though... Sonic Team made NiGHTS, and indeed Sonic is playable as a chrarcter within the game.

Surely the same team worked on this game? Could this engine be a forerunner to NiGHTS rather than a rip off????

I've seen this before on unseen64 (http://www.unseen64.cjb.net/), although it seems a bit different there.

Speaking about the game, well, i know this is just an early version of it, but it really dosn't seem that good. Who knows, if finished it could be a pretty cool game, but i really don't think the saturn had the power to make a good Sonic 3D (a real one, not that isometric crap).

The closest thing we had of that was that 3D stage in Sonic Jam (one of my favorites games in my collection, by the way) and i didn't like it. It was to confusing to navigate and, if memory serves me well, the frame rate wasn't high enough to allow a fluid and fast gameplay.
